Low self-esteem

Why is it not okay to be positive about yourself, but it is okay to be negative about yourself? This is something that really confuses me. All the time I hear people be disparaging about themselves, and I rarely hear people be confident about themselves. Why is it so bad to like the way you are, or be proud of what you have done? Low self-esteem is a common, growing problem and needs attention.

Finding the cause of your low self-esteem in the first place is a good way to build your self-confidence. It is easier to be negative about yourself than confident. The reason for this is that if you be negative about yourself, people can’t put you down. If you be confident people can easily give you criticism. If you hear people talking gloomily about themselves, tell them something you like about them or say a simple compliment. Things like this can really help.
Did you know that 85% of the world suffers from low self-esteem? Low self-esteem is the number one cause that people aren’t living to their full potential and aren’t living their dream life. Living your dream life doesn’t mean hopping on a plane and going somewhere special or being successful in your job. Personally I think living the dream life is finding happiness and being grateful for what you have.
Social media is a big problem for your self-esteem, particularly Instagram and Facebook. You most likely have one of these or even both. You probably don’t know what is so bad about it. Well I am about to tell you. Usually when someone posts a picture it is extremely choreographed and people are looking their best. Your brain tends to trick you, so you end up thinking this is what people look like and do every day. I’m telling you right now that is not true.
Low self-esteem is a problem that needs to be stopped. If you have low self-esteem, you should change the way you think about yourself and turn the problem around. Same if you’re a person that criticizes people for being happy about themselves. I would be admiring the people that can be happy about themselves because in today’s society being confident is very courageous.

This is another fantastic piece of writing Olive. It is a very good point. There is nothing wrong with celebrating our accomplishments and our real friends are usually happy and excited for us.

Of course, being proud of who we are has nothing to do with putting down other people and telling people we are better than them. We still need to respect other people too.
